Sir Daniel Gooch (1816-1889), inspired to become an engineer after a meeting with George Stephenson. Gooch kept voluminous diaries, and these extracts illustrate what he belived to be his most important contributions to British engineering, both designing railway locomotives and laying the first underwater transatlantic cable.
