A number of unidentified men are stood in the background. The names of the men are inscribed underneath the photo: 'J. Scott Russell, Henry Wakefield, I. K. Brunel and Lord Derby'. Photograph taken by Robert Howlett. Richard Tames identifies the figures as John Scott Russell, Henry Wakefield, Brunel, and Solomon Tredwell at the launch [1859]'. The National Portrait Gallery catalogue, which holds the original, identifies the figures as William Harrison, William Jacomb, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and Solomon Tredwell.
