НазваниеThe ss Great Britain off Liverpool flying the Atlantic Flag
    Создатель Francis Hustwick (painter)‎
ОписаниеPainting by the Liverpool marine artist Francis Hustwick of the SS Great Britain arriving in Liverpool in 1845. The ship had just completed her first successful transatlantic voyage to New York and back. A specially created 'Atlantic Flag', a combination of the British and American flags, can be seen flying at the first mast top. The background of the painting is based on a well-known print by another artist, which Hustwick used in a series of ship portraits. The SS Great Britain can be seen in the centre of the painting in a starboard profile view. All the sails are furled and smoke is coming from the funnel. The Liverpool skyline appears in the background with landmarks such as the Custom House with its portico visible on the right in front of the ship's bows. A small rowing boat can be seen in the foreground with a buoy to the right. In the background to the left a Liverpool pilot cutter can be seen and to the right a large sailing vessel flying an American flag. In the far distance to the right a paddle steamer is visible, which is likely to represent the PS Liverpool.
