The United States was launched in 1952 for the United States Lines and served on the Southampton to New York route. In1969 she was laid up, and in 1973 sold to United States Federal Maritime Administration. The ship changed ownership several times until she was laid up in Philadelphia in 1996. In 2011 efforts began to preserve and restore the ship.
