Typed transcript copy of letter from John Lewis to his wife while on board the Great Britain. Includes 3 entries from August 22nd, 23rd and 24th 1853.
The letter was sent from St. Vincent, one of the "Cape de Verd Islands"
First entry is titled "Great Britain" Steam ship "At Sea" August 22nd 11p.m. 1853
In which Lewis details his good health.
The second entry from 23rd August explains the very hot weather, nearly 100 in the shade. Lewis also talks of the death of a little girl, Adelle Cameron, on board from who died from Bronchitis that afternoon, who will be buried at St. Vincent.
The final entry 24th August written from St. Vincent explains the sister of Adelle has also died, and Lewis fears for the health of the mother. The Carpenter made their tombstone from a piece of plank. John Lewis says he has also sent a bit of the fern from the spot the girls will be buried in.
