Voyage box 10, item 14
Printed copy of the Captain's Instructions for the Management of Cadets.
The letter instructs the Cadets to be treated as "gentlemen by birth". That they have their own quarters, are not interfered with and that the Steward appointed to their mess "pays them proper attention".
They must also be taught to be efficient seamen. They instruct there is no mess allowance of wine, spirits or liquor and ask the captain to reduce their liquor purchase to as little as possible, and for any drunkenness or "improper conduct" to be reported on return.
Also details a commission of 2 1/2 per cent. per annum, upon the premium and mess money paid by each Cadet.
