Original in SSGB collection: 1997.011. 'Letter from James Combe to Chairman of Great Western Steamship Company. Dated 11th December 1846. Postmarked Belfast 12th December 1846 and Bristol 14th December 1846. Coombe is writing to support a plan to salvage ss Great Britain from Dundrum Bay 'proposed ten days since to Capt Hoskens at Dundrum by Mr George Taylor of Leeds'. Coombe has taken 'the liberty of writing to you on the subject, in case a good plan would be overlooked amongst the multitude of other applications'. Coombe praises Taylor's 'abilities and confidence in carrying out anything he undertakes'. He believes that using Taylor's plan the Great Britain can be raised and moved 'at no extravagent cost'. Coombe states that 'Mr Taylor is willing to undertake the work at his own risk on the principle of no cure, no pay'. Mr Taylor is ready to communicate his plan provided he is guaranteed that nobody else will be allowed to use it.'
