When the author was honoured by a request from the Secretary to contribute a paper to the Society's Staff Association, it was his first intention that it should consist of his reminiscences of ships and ship-building extending over a period of about seventy years, but finding that he had in his possession some antecedent historical records, he was led to belive they might, if narrated, be of interest to the members.
