TitleThe SS Great Britain in Table Bay, 1852
Creator John Wilson (painter)
DescriptionPainting showing the SS Great Britain in Table Bay, South Africa in 1852. A port view of the ship is the focal point of the painting, showing the Great Britain's four masts and two parallel funnels. Most sails are set with smoke coming from the funnels as well. The Gibbs, Bright & Co. flag is shown on the main mast, with identifying flags and the red ensign also depicted.
In the foreground the choppy sea is visible with some sea birds flying close to the waves. On the left side of the painting Table Mountain is visible in the background, with several smaller sailing vessels, including a lateen sail, also shown.
The SS Great Britain had been converted to carry passengers to Australia in 1852 and only made two voyages in this configuration, one to New York and one to Australia in 1852/53.
