DescriptionIron-hulled steamship SS Great Britain, restored externally to her 1843 configuration with 6 masts and schooner rig. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, built by William Patterson in the newly built Great Western Dockyard at Bristol and launched on 19 July 1843. She was the first ocean going iron-hulled, propeller driven steamship. The iron for the hull came from Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge.
Salvaged from the Falkland Islands in 1970 and returned to Bristol. Now presented in dry dock at the Great Western Dockyard, conserved and restored, accessible to the public. Internally the vessel is restored to represent various different periods of the ship's working life.
