TitlePhotograph of crew on the deck of the Great Britain, 1880s
Creator Ernest W. Newth (photographer)
DescriptionPhotograph mounted on card showing eighteen members of the crew on the weather deck of the Great Britain. The photograph was taken in the 1880s in San Francisco when the Great Britain had been converted to a cargo sailing vessel.
The image shows a group of nine men visible in the centre of the image, two boys sitting on the deck to the right of centre, a group of five men on the right in the background, and a man wearing a Scot bonnet hat on the far right in the foreground looking directly at the camera. The man in the suit in the foreground on the left is most likely Captain Stap. Chickens can be seen walking free on the deck (in foreground on the right).
Lifeboats and rigging of the three masts are visible with yards for main and upper sails. Sails are shown furled to the masts. Other deck fittings and furniture visible are companionways, deck hatches, cleats and running rigging.
Produced by the photography studio of Ernest W. Newth. Newth was active in the 1870s and 1880s in San Francisco and produced stereoscopic images as well as marine photography.
